Crucified Nature

Here I´m sharing with you "Crucified Nature," my latest audio-slide show, the first made with my iPhone, which shows the unnecessary and exaggerated pruning of trees and deforestation in my native Spain.

Spain has suffered intense deforestation the past few decades. The elimination of forests is provoking radical temperature changes, droughts, heavy rains, huge fires and even tornadoes.

Even though severe weather changes should be reason enough to alter our how we farm and stop deforesting, killing trees has increased worldwide. In southern Spain many city and town governments actually promote the seemingly illogical topping off of trees that line the city's streets.

In this report you will hear the words of Miguel Angel Rosales, a forest engineer who specializes in trees, and Alejandro García, a beekeeper and queen breeder.

Some of my audiovisuals related to photography made by blind photographers will be on exhibit during a photo festival a the Sofia Arsenal Museum for Contemporary Art in Sofia, Bulgaria in November 2013. The photographers are blind or visually impaired who have taken photo workshops at the Ojos que Sienten association. It's been a great honor to work with them over the years, as they have taught me the real meaning of communicating with our cameras.

We are what we eat

We are what we eat is an audio-slide show about organic agriculture. Antonio Mulero Tamayo, a successful ecological farmer who has been growing organic food for 17 years, shares what's different about his crops compared to conventional, mass produced food. My images show him and his family working on their farm: the Organic Garden Los Tamayos, located on the outskirts of Prado del Rey in the Sierra de Cádiz in Spain's southerner Andalusia.

3000 years of salt

I want to share a story about the salt mine called Salinas de Hortales.  It's located in the town I grew up, in an area where the Phoenicians settled 3,000 years ago. The salt mine was later part of the Roman empire's legendary city of Iptuci, located 100 kilometers from the sea in a mountainous region of  the Sierra de Cadiz. Today, the family that mines the salt flat uses the same centuries-old natural techniques in the village of Prado del Rey in southern Spain's Andalusia.

Puppet Show. Audio-Slide Show

Puppet show is an audio-slide show about an artist's way of educating kids to not abandon their pets. Actress Martha Tapia Madrid from Perenganitos Teatro Infantil created a puppet show theatre and used a story from her own experience, she titled the story Bow Wow. Some of the best works of art are inspired by the artist's real life situations.

Dreaming in color. Audio-Slide Show

"Dreaming in Color" is my latest audiovisual created with Marco Antonio Martínez, a blind photographer from the Ojos que Sienten organization. Trough his photos and his voice Marco illustrates the first dream he had after going blind one week before.

To take pictures of a reconstructed dream, he started building the scenes, using clay and aluminum to mold figurines and diferent fabrics to mimic certain surfaces.

Canine Miracles. A sanctuary for dogs. Audio-slide show

This audio-slide show tells the story of dogs that live in a sanctuary created just for them: dogs that were abused and/or abandoned, coined "Milagros Caninos," or Canine Miracles. The sanctuary gives shelter to dogs with a wide range of health challenges: old age, cancer, blindness, deafness, paralysis from being run over by a car, tortured, raped, dogs forced to fight or drugged.

This four minute audiovisual shares the story of just two of the 500 dogs that have been cared for at Milagros Caninos, overcoming physical damage caused by abusive owners, but that now live a normal and healthy life, thanks to Patricia Ruiz who opened the shelter in Mexico City's Xochimilco area. During the making of the story, Ruiz reflected that "We can always move on, be happy, be content and say yes to life," as she reflected on what her dogs have taught her over the years.

The economic situation at the shelter is not stable, and is on the verge of closing, due to lack of money for dog food and veterinarian care. You can help it stay open by donating money. Their website has a "donar," or "donate" button on the main page: www.milagroscaninos.org

Mexico Invisible - Museo Franz Mayer - Chico Sanchez Audio-Slide Shows with Ojos que Sienten

I want to invite you to visit Mexico Invisible, a photography exhibit at the Franz Mayer museum in Mexico City. The exhibit was inspired by a letter written by Mexican philanthropist Manuel Arango called Mexico Invisible and displays pictures made by blind and visually impaired photographers from the workshops at Ojos que Sienten along with almost all of the audio-slide shows I produced with some of the photographers.




The exhibition was inaugurated on Nov. 23
and it will be open until January 27 next year 2013. Click here to find a map to get there.
