Quality Work

This story gives us the opportunity to reflect on our own lives. Do we put our lives in the hands of others and blame them for our situation? If so, this story invites us to take a step forward and take responsability for our lives. Being thankfull for what we have and focusing our energy on improving our lives gives us an oportunity to stop being victims and change our lives for the better. The choice is ours. Abandon fear and fanaticism. We can stop blaming others now for our mistakes and choose to be free.
José Jiménez in his tailoring shop
Jose Jimenez started tailoring the year I was born, 1971. He chose to be happy working. To live his life and value his health. Which path have you chosen? Do you chose a path that allows you to live from your efforts or do you live blaming others for what happens to you?

While making this short audio-slide show, Jose taught me the main obstacle we face in life is ourselves, because instead of creating our lives, we spend our energy blaming others for our failures. There are many things we would like to do but don´t even try, because we´re afraid of what other´s might say or fear failure.

To remember how important it´s that we build our own future, Jose displays a sign in his shop that says “Don´t be afraid of the competition, but fear incompetence.” It´s incompetent to fear taking control of our lives. Fear betrays us and turns us into victims who live blaming others for our failures.

Jose has a job that is truly ecological, and althought he never win prizes, it´s thanks to people like him that our world isn´t totally contaminated. How many “ecologists” are there who take their clothes to the tailor and how many who buy the “latest brands” and throw away perfectly usable clothing?

If it´s true, as many say, that we care about the planet and humanity, would it not be better to repair clothing in good condition instead of buying new clothes made by a factory slave, or even worse by robotic soulless machines?

Jose recognizes that thanks to “His boss,” God, and his parents who gave him love, respect and education, he has been able to lead a happy life, and above all, to accept and overcome difficult times that come and go.

The Mayan Prophecy of the Fith Sun

An entomologist from Portugal would have never guessed he would walk into a Mayan prophecy carrying all the signs they were waiting for.

His half wilted face. His broken tooth. Even the timing of his arrival to Merida, Mexico.

The Gods could not have arranged it any more perfectly for him to realize that everything was happening according to plan.

He was the boy who played with the bees and who as an adult was given Mayan secrets on how they cared for the insects.

Today he uses this ancient knowledge to help humankind help nature reestablish its balance.

The Guilds

I´m sharing The Guilds, a new audio-slide show about Easter week in Trujillo, Caceres, Extremadura, Spain, where medieval Germanic guilds evolved into today´s Holy Week brotherhoods. Jose Antonio Ramos Rubio, the town´s historian, explains how centuries ago his city solved a controversy between two neighborhoods that wanted to parade their statues of the crucified Christ on Holy Friday.

Trujillo is one of Spain´s oldest cities. The contribution of this city to the exploration and conquest of the Americas was substantial. Many famous explorers were born in the city, such as Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Perú, or Francisco de Orellana, the first European who found the Amazon.

Invisible Angels

Sharing my new audio-slide show production titled "Invisible Angels" featuring pictures taken by blind and visually impaired photographers Gerardo Ramirez, Palmira Martinez y Raul Lopez.

The story contains interviews on them explaining their experiences using Mexico City´s metro to get around the city.

Photography is a way to communicate, not a competition among shooters. There is no winner and looser. Their goal is to tell their story.

The art of communication is not exclusive to professional photographers or institutions. Life is richer when there are different points of view, experiences and diverse people share their stories. Everyone´s stories should be judged by the content and message.

Here you can see a playlist with all the previous audio-slide shows
I have produced with blind and visually impaired photographers.

Heartland

The Heartland is an audio-slide show about farmer Tomas Villanueva Buendia, who began a seed bank he calls "Tepetlixpa Seed Bank", to protect and rescue the original varieties of his nation´s corn. The Mexican governtment is promoting foreign, genetically modified organism (GMOs) corn. If GMOs enter Mexico, they will contaminate more than 1000 varieties of corn, killing the legacy of the Aztecs, Mayans, and other indigenous civilizations. GMOs are banned in many countries due to link with causing health problems, environmental damage and destroying diversity. If Mexico lets GMOs destroy their milenary culture of native corn, the legacy of their ancient god Quetzalcoatl (Aztec) and Kukulkan (Mayan) will be lost forever.

The Mayan Trumpet. Voice of Earth

Years ago, while playing a didgeridoo on the sidewalks of Mexico´s Playa del Carmen, musician Luis Bernardo Mendez Sanchez wa taken on a magical adventure that lead him to rediscover the same instrument in his own country, in the heart of the Mexican Lacandon forest. An inner voice led him to the Mayan Trumpet, known by its indigenous name "Incus utop chek" or "Tree flower trumpet".

The Black Christ Brotherhood

Audiovisual story about the Black Christ Brotherhood in Caceres, in Spain's Extremadura region.

The Black Christ Brotherhood was inactive for two centuries until a group of friends revived it in 1985. Alonso Corrales Gaitán, steward of the brotherhood, explains how the order originally started as a group who helped the poor and buried the unwanted dead, and that today the brotherhood focuses on charity work and parades every Wednesday of Easter Week.

The sculpture of the Black Christ by an anonymous author arrived to Caceres in the 14th century and is historically linked to the flight of the Templars from Europe to Portugal.

The other side of the coin

My audio-slide show The Sight Within was presented as part of a TED x talk at the University of Surrey in England by Gina Badenoch, founder of Ojos que Sienten, an association that works with blind and visually impaired photographers with which I've been collaborating the past four years in Mexico City. Badenoch explains why and how she decided to start teaching photography to blind and visually impaired people.

The Monarch Butterfly

Sharing a short audio-slide show about the monarch butterfly, whose ability to migrate every year from Canada to México is at serious risk. Experts say the corridor they use to fly north and south is becoming obsolete, for several reason, and could put an end to the monarch migration sooner than we think :
  • Genetically modified crops and agro-chemicals in the US are killing the milkweed they eat
  • Deforestation in the US
  • Urban sprawl  in the US
  • Climate change
  • Mexico´s illegal logging in the forests where they hibernate during winter months.
It´s uncertain what will happen in the coming years when the monarch butterflies try to return via the US to Canada, where extremely cold temperatures are caused mainly by deforestation.

Twenty years ago this beautiful insect was the symbol adopted by the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA), a commercial agreement between Canada, Mexico and United States. These three countries signed environmental accords to protect migratory animals like the monarch butterfly, but today two decades later, the monarch butterfly is on the brink of disappearing.

This audio-slide show contains pictures taken at two Monarch butterflies sanctuaries: El Rosario in Angangueo, Michoacán in 2007, and Cerro Pelón sanctuary in Capulín, Mexico state in 2010-12 and 2014. Every time I go to a sancturary, there are noticeably fewer monarchs to photograph.

The accompanying audio is the amplified sound made by the monarchs as they fly, a kind of buzzing sound,  without effects or distortion. This is how it sounds.

Bees and bats are suffering a huge decline as well. Nobody seams to react, and our society keeps using the same agriculture and industrial procedures that are destroying life on our earth. I hope this audio-slide show encourages people to look for information on how some big agro-chemical companies are causing severe damage to our planet earth, in the name of profit.

What I saw on the plane

Iberia's magazine

Days ago I returned home to Mexico from a nearly two month visit to Spain to visit family and work on new stories.

On the flight back I was flipping through Iberia's company magazine and spotted one of my pictures published double truck!

It was a photograph I took of a woman dancing flamenco, and carried the story title "Spain Alive" (España Viva). It has a Corbis credit, which licensed it from Aurora Photos, one of the photo agencies that distributes my pictures.

The image is from my audiovisual "The Angel" about flamenco music, that describes "The Angel," also known also as "el duende," which is a kind of spirit. It refers to a presence or trance that occurs during flamenco jam sessions which I've actually experienced first hand, years ago when I was a musician. Here is the image that was published in their magazine.
(Photo © Chico Sanchez - All Rights Reserved)
An important part of Flamenco is loosing its ancestral roots and is becoming an empty entertainment show, so I decided to do this story to show its spiritual and magical side. Today Flamenco is a misunderstood art, mostly due to it's commercial exhibits which doesn't maintain its essence.
.
Below is the audio-slide show The Angel for which this picture was made.

Searching for the essence

Farmer Fernando Mulero Ardila has devoted much of his life to searching for and finding currents of water moving under his farm using a pendulum.

For a lack of water to irrigate his crops, Mulero started using a pendulum and became a "Zahori," or a "water diviner."  His search has located almost a dozen of wells and has made his land more valuable. Mulero explains his experience on the importance that one has on the primary element of life: water.

Canine Miracles. A sanctuary for dogs. Audio-slide show

This audio-slide show tells the story of dogs that live in a sanctuary created just for them: dogs that were abused and/or abandoned, coined "Milagros Caninos," or Canine Miracles. The sanctuary gives shelter to dogs with a wide range of health challenges: old age, cancer, blindness, deafness, paralysis from being run over by a car, tortured, raped, dogs forced to fight or drugged.

This four minute audiovisual shares the story of just two of the 500 dogs that have been cared for at Milagros Caninos, overcoming physical damage caused by abusive owners, but that now live a normal and healthy life, thanks to Patricia Ruiz who opened the shelter in Mexico City's Xochimilco area. During the making of the story, Ruiz reflected that "We can always move on, be happy, be content and say yes to life," as she reflected on what her dogs have taught her over the years.

The economic situation at the shelter is not stable, and is on the verge of closing, due to lack of money for dog food and veterinarian care. You can help it stay open by donating money. Their website has a "donar," or "donate" button on the main page: www.milagroscaninos.org
