Coming back home. Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, México

I´m sharing my most recent audio-slide show about The Day of the Dead tradition en Oaxaca, Mexico. This celebration mixes ancient Pre-Hispanic traditions with the European tradition of the Catholic All Souls Day.

Every year Oaxacans decorate their cemeteries with flowers and candles. They create bountiful altars filled with food and drink, for their loved ones who have passed who return home on this special day for a visit.

I interviewed Jose Hernandez Alaves, a candle maker in the town of Teotitlan del Valle. The music bands are ¨Los Reformistas¨ from Teotitlan del Valle and ¨Oro de Oaxaca¨ from
San Jeronimo Tlacochahuaya. The last song was recorded from a band playing a funeral song during an actual funeral process that I witnessed at the cemetery in Santa Ana Zegache.

This audiovisual also includes the following places: Mitla, San Martin Tilcajete, San Sebastian Abasolo, Santa Maria del Tule and Oaxaca de Juarez.

New Youtube Channel - English and Spanish audio-slide shows

I'm starting 2012 with a new Youtube channel. I've discovered Youtube to be a practical place to share my audio-slide shows beyond by website. In the last six months I tested my stories in Spanish and was surprised to get about 50,000 visits ! So, I've recently finished uploading the English versions in order to reach a larger English speaking audience.

Ivan - Stronger than a hug

I want to share the story Stronger than a Hug. This great story is about Alonso Barrios, a 9-year-old boy, who was born without arms and who learned to live with his handicap, photographed by Ivan Gonzalez. Ivan is a photographer and photo editor in Caracas, Venezuela. He is also a good friend. We worked together for several years in Venezuela. I'm honored to feature his work in my blog.

Chabelita

My latest audio-slide show is about Isabel Alarcón, or Chabelita, and the home for the elderly women where she resides in Mexico City. This 99-year-old woman has taught me a few life lessons and that above all else to accept life as it is. I'd like to share something she told me when I wasn't recording:

"A human being is like a windmill. To last one must be in constant movement, jumping, running, walking, up the stairs, then down...always moving."

This is her secret to reaching age 99.

Working on this story made me realize how much knowledge and wisdom is lost and forgotten in old folks homes. I could have done a different story on every single woman who lives there.
