New Youtube Channel - English and Spanish audio-slide shows

I'm starting 2012 with a new Youtube channel. I've discovered Youtube to be a practical place to share my audio-slide shows beyond by website. In the last six months I tested my stories in Spanish and was surprised to get about 50,000 visits ! So, I've recently finished uploading the English versions in order to reach a larger English speaking audience.

Ancla2 - Community Journalism for Children in Venezuela

I'm sharing a short multimedia piece by Ancla2, a cooperative that gives photography and community journalism workshops to children in Venezuela. The video is recorded in Gavidia, a village in Venezuela's Andes mountains. The coop does an amazing job all around the country, especially with youth who live in areas with high street violence and drugs. The piece is in Spanish but I think even non Spanish speakers will be touched by the story it tels. It lasts 11 minutes.

A dos pasos del corazon - A photographer's story

I want to share the story of Juan Baños Rufo, a photographer in Seville who takes pictures of weddings, baptisms and communions at the age of 85, practicing this profession since 1944. I found this story published in The Travel Photographer blog by Tewfic El-Sawy. I want to mention this blog because Tewfic is a master finding touching stories.

The piece is created by Sergio Caro and Ernesto Villalba, members of Once Upon a Time, a Spanish multimedia and documentary film company. Their work is really good. To see it click the photo.

The Way of Saint James

I walked 290 kilometers in northern Spain for two weeks from Astorga to Santiago de Compostela. It's the last stretch of the route known as The French Way, which is part of The Way of Saint James, or 'Camino de Santiago.' It's a pilgrimage, and one of the best experiences I've ever had.

Here is an audio-slide show about the trip, with pictures of the sites and audio of the sounds of this amazing journey. I hope you enjoy.

John Adkisson

I'm going to share the story 'They stole so much more' by visual journalist John Adkisson native of Charlotte, N.C, and currently based in Miami.

Store clerk Monir Alyatim was fatally shot during a robbery while working at Saba's Mini Mart in Flint, Michigan. Alyatim left behind a wife of ten years and two small children. This is the story of his wife Neketia.

The Sight Whitin

I'm sharing my latest audio-slide show: The Sight Within. To do this story I've followed a photography workshop for the blind and visually impaired, run by Sight of Emotion, or Ojos que Sienten, in Mexico City. Seeing blind people take better and more creative pictures than myself has been an enlightening experience and changed my way of thinking about what photography is.

A Home for Sick Children

Months ago the people who run the shelter for chronically ill children, the San Judas Tadeo Foundation in Mexico City, asked me to help them by making an audio-slide show to help them raise money to keep their shelter working. The current economical crisis has affected donations and they're having a hard time paying their bills.

Here I'm sharing the audio-slide show that I made for them for free. It's my donation to their cause. It is not a journalistic piece but has instead a commercial purpose to help them find donors.

My latest audio-slide show is the story of Citlali, a six-year-old girl who has been fighting illness for several years with her mother Adriana by her side. They live in the San Judas Tadeo shelter for chronically ill children in Mexico City where they can sleep and eat for free and be close to the hospital where Citlali undergoes treatment.
